About Laurel Guy
is outstanding in her field
WHO IS LAUREL GUY? You might find Laurel on the side of the road or out standing in a field in either Ithaca NY or Santa Fe NM. The Finger Lakes region of Upstate NY and the Southwest -- they couldn't be more different and yet they both inspire her. It’s about the sky. The hills. The color.
Her car is always packed with art supplies and ready to go. On a perfect day, she takes out her easel, soft pastels, sanded paper and her dog Hugo and makes a painting.
There is something about the view in that particular place that made her stop and look at the world.
WHAT IS PLEIN-AIR? A painting made on site in the great outdoors.
WHAT ARE SOFT PASTELS? Pastels are a dry medium made with the same pigment used in oil paint (without the oil.) Pastels are the closest to pure color of any of the painting mediums.
WHAT IS A PERFECT DAY? A perfect day when the day itself seems to tell you stop everything and come look closer at the world. A blue sky day when the air is crisp, the light is shimmering. All of us should listen to that call, because perfect days are like a string of pearls...a precious treasure.
HOW DOES LAUREL GUY DO IT? Pastel painting is hands-on art. No brush. As she works with the pastels, it is as though her fingers have eyes. They move quickly, transmitting energy and color, shaping a lasting impression of a part of nature onto paper.
